Zimą 1969, kiedy to Jimmy Page i Robert Plant znajdowali się w Bron-Yr-Aur i komponowali utwory na Led Zeppelin III , Page od tak stworzył piosenkę .... Muzyk wspomina: „W tamtej chwili, to był jedynie szkic, zwykły kawałek pośród innych” . Odstawił go więc gdzieś na bok, na jakiś rok… Wrócił on do utworu, kiedy zespół przebywał w Headley Grange w Hampshire (tj. hrabstwie w południowej Anglii). Na początku zaprezentował go John Paul Jonesowi, na którym zrobił na prawdę duże wrażenie, większe niż pierwsze klocki lego (http://www.bdsklep.pl/lego) od Mikołaja. Przez całą noc duet dopracowywał poszczególne części utworu, dodając syntezatory, bas i w końcu wypracowując historyczne solo. Następnego dnia zaprezentowali demo Plantowi, który był pod tym samym wrażeniem, co na początku Jones. W tym samym momencie Plant udał się w miejsce odosobnione już z "wątkiem" w głowie. Po upływie dwóch godzin słowa do utworu były już gotowe. Później w wywiadach opowiadał, że to anioł szeptał mu słowa do ucha, gdy ten był pogrążony w transie.

Utwór został nagrany w grudniu 1970 roku w londyńskim studio Island. Solo Page nagrał za pierwszym razem. Po raz pierwszy na scenie utwór został wykonany podczas show w Belfast's Ulster Hall, 5 marca 1971.
Stairway to Heaven zajmuje dopiero 31 miejsce na liście 500 utworów wszech czasów wg magazynu Rolling Stone. W roku 2003 utwór znalazł się na 1. miejscu na liście 100 Greatest Guitar Solos.
